Climate Change

Climate change is the intense shift in temperature and weather patterns resulting from human activities. These include the burning of fossil fuels and other industrial practices that emit large amounts of carbon dioxide. The term “global warming” is often interchangeable with climate change.

Desertification

You think of a desert, and you imagine a nomad thirsty for water. Yet desertification is a process that loses more than water. Once productive land — for crops or wild vegetation — becomes infertile. This is true desertification, wherein the soil loses its nutrients, resulting in loss of biodiversity. As mentioned, it is not only about land becoming arid; it also lowers the atmosphere. How? The absence of water means that the sun’s energy stays in the soil, warming it longer.

Desertification can result from over-farming and excessive development.

Biodiversity

Short for biological diversity, this is one of the words related to environment that measures how many different species inhabit an ecosystem. These species can be floral, faunal, or microbial. It also refers to genetic variations.

Biodiversity is a good thing because it contributes to clean water, fertile ground, and increased pollination for many plants.

Greenhouse Gases

Greenhouse gas is a common term when talking about the environment. But what is it? It embraces a number of chemical compounds —carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide — that aggravate global warming and climate change.

A larger concentration of these gases in the atmosphere traps more heat in the immediate environment. Factories and farms; most planes, cars, and trucks; and likely even you bear some responsibility for greenhouse gas emissions.

Sustainability

Sustain means to keep going or to continue. As it relates to the environment, sustainability is the state whereby an ecosystem preserves itself intact. This means that its plant and animal species reproduce at a rate that keeps their populations stable and in balance. People can assist sustainability by not removing too many resources too quickly.

Pollution

You might immediately think of black smoke billowing from an exhaust tailpipe or a smokestack when you hear the word “pollution.” However, pollution can be any substance that degrades an otherwise pure environment. Of course, industrial emission is a clear example, but so is litter in a park or wilderness area. An oil spill in a waterway is an extreme example, yet it takes less than that to corrupt the water supply. So, pollution is not always perceptible by your senses.

Conservation

Conservation, in the broadest sense, is the responsible use of resources and the avoidance of waste. As one of the words related to environment, it focuses on saving species from extinction and preserving natural systems for future generations. For instance, many people practice conservation by recycling paper, bottles, or cans. The government also helps mitigate environmental problems by placing limits on logging and hunting harvests.

Renewable Energy

Fossil fuels take thousands, even millions, of years to regenerate. On the other hand, renewable energy sources are more immediately replaced and ready for use. These sources include wind, solar, biomass, hydropower, and biogas. These alternatives are in less danger of depletion and do not emit or have lower amounts of carbon dioxide emission than traditional energy sources.

Ecosystem

Just as you live in a community with neighbors and businesses, biological organisms exist in an ecosystem. This is where they have their food sources, find cover and protection, reproduce, and interact with other organisms. The world is an ecosystem that consists of countless smaller ecosystems. For instance, a forest, a pond, and a mountain are all ecosystems. So are a single tree and a patch of soil. Anywhere that organisms meet their needs and serve the needs of other organisms — as food or means of procreation, for example — meets this definition.
