What Is Wingdings Text?

Wingdings is a symbolic font developed by Microsoft in 1990, consisting of a variety of icons, shapes, and pictograms instead of traditional alphabetic characters. Unlike standard typefaces, Wingdings does not map letters to recognizable text but instead replaces them with graphical symbols, including arrows, stars, hands, and religious and astrological icons. It was created as a way to provide easily accessible symbols for desktop publishing and design purposes before the widespread availability of emoji and Unicode symbols. Because Wingdings follows a unique encoding system rather than the standard ASCII or Unicode mappings, typing text in Wingdings results in an unreadable mix of symbols unless one knows the corresponding character mappings.

Despite its unconventional design, Wingdings gained popularity in early computing, particularly in Microsoft Word and other Office applications, where users could use it to insert decorative elements into documents. Over the years, Wingdings and its successors, such as Webdings and Wingdings 2 and 3, have been incorporated into Windows operating systems as default fonts. While largely replaced by modern Unicode symbols, Wingdings remains a recognizable and nostalgic relic of early digital typography. It has also been at the center of various internet conspiracy theories due to how some symbol combinations can be interpreted, though these are purely coincidental and not part of any intentional design choices.

How Is the Text Generated?

Our generator creates Wingdings text with the use of Unicode characters. This is different from the traditional Microsoft Word way of creating Wingdings with dedicated font files. This way you can copy and paste the Wingdings into other places.

Unicode is an industry-standard way of encoding (rendering/showing) characters on a screen. While rendering the standard Latin alphabet is fairly straightforward for a computer, rendering complicated symbols like Chinese and Georgian characters are not so easy.

A computer needs a way to render all of the possible characters for various languages as well as emojis which have become quite popular. According to Wikipedia, there are now “137,994 characters covering 150 modern and historic scripts, as well as multiple symbol sets and emoji” in the Unicode character set. In addition to many useful characters, like Chinese characters, Unicode also contains some cool characters as well, such as bubble text.
