Spring

Spring runs from March through May in the Northern Hemisphere, marking the shift from cold to warm weather. Some words to describe spring include lush, peaceful, invigorating, or even blooming.

You’ll see the word used for anything tied to renewal or fresh starts, like a “spring cleaning” or a “springtime sale.” People even hang spring sayings signs! It also shows up as a verb, as in “spring into action,” which has nothing to do with the season at all. Writers lean on it constantly when they want a quick symbol for new beginnings, since the season already carries that meaning on its own.

So when does spring start? Well, the exact start date slightly varies each year, since the spring equinox depends on Earth’s orbit rather than a fixed date on the calendar.

Summer

Summer covers June through August and is associated with vacation, heat, and free time more than any other season. You will also hear this season word associated with jobs (summer job), breaks (summer break), and even flings (summer fling). The word also works as a verb in older or more formal writing, as in “they summered in the mountains.”

Fall

Fall and autumn mean the same thing, but fall is the more common term in American English, while autumn shows up more in British writing.

Winter

You’ll also see “winterize,” a term specific to preparing homes, cars, or equipment for cold weather.

Fun Fact: Long before any modern holiday existed, ancient cultures from Scandinavia to Rome built entire festivals around the winter solstice, the single shortest day of the year.

Seasonal

Seasonal describes anything that changes or only exists during a specific time of year. A seasonal job lasts a few months, seasonal allergies flare up at predictable times, and seasonal produce only shows up in stores when it’s actually in season. The word gets used a lot in retail and agriculture for this exact reason.

Equinox

Twice a year, in spring and fall, when day and night are roughly equal length everywhere on Earth, an equinox occurs. It marks the official astronomical start of each season, even though weather patterns rarely line up with the calendar.

People sometimes use “equinox” loosely to mean “balance,” but that’s more of a poetic stretch than an actual definition. Outside of science writing, the word mostly shows up in event names or branding, since it sounds a little more elevated than just saying “the first day of spring.”

Fun Fact: The term itself comes straight from Latin, combining the words for “equal” and “night,” so the name has always been about that exact balance.

Holiday

In American English, “holiday” usually means a specific day off, like Thanksgiving or the Fourth of July. In British English, it’s the word for what Americans call a vacation, so “going on holiday” just means taking a trip. The word also gets capitalized and used as shorthand for the stretch between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, as in “holiday shopping” or “holiday season.”

Beach

Camping

Camping means sleeping outdoors, usually in a tent, away from regular housing and utilities. It ranges from backcountry trips with no amenities to car camping at a site with bathrooms and a picnic table a few feet away. The word also gets used in gaming slang, where “camping” means staying in one spot to ambush other players.

Outside of gaming, people also stretch the word into “glamping,” a blend of glamorous and camping that describes outdoor stays with real beds and electricity.
