100+ Words Related to Nature

Whether you’re writing, journaling, or simply describing the world around you, words related to nature come in various forms. Some are beautiful and lyrical. Others are more scientific. All can make powerful additions to nature-related wordsmithing.

Floods

You’re probably familiar with floods as water-based phenomena; they’re common enough after disasters like typhoons. However, there have been other notable floods of beer, molasses, fruit juice, and even melted chocolate. You can also use “flood” in a more figurative sense to describe a tremendous outpouring of something. You can be flooded with joy, flooded with opportunity, and more.

Volcano

Volcano is another nature word with both literal and figurative meanings. Literally, they’re openings in the Earth’s crust that spew hot lava when they erupt. They don’t have to be mountains; in fact, most of the planet’s volcanoes are underwater. In the more poetic sense, you can describe situations and even people as “volcanic” when they’re volatile and likely to explode without warning.

Rainforest

As you might expect from the name, rainforests are all about rain. They get it the entire year without seasonal breaks. What you might not know is that rainforests aren’t all hot and humid jungles: There are two different types, tropical and temperate, and there are even more sub-classifications depending on their unique locations and structures. One thing that they have in common, however, is their lush and vibrant biodiversity.

Ecosystem

How do you define an ecosystem? Simply put, it’s an area where living and non-living organisms come together to form a community. “Organisms” in this context might range from plants and animals to landscapes and weather patterns. You’ll hear the term in all kinds of geographic literature.

Dandelion

Dandelions are bright yellow flowers that herald the start of spring. Their name means “lion’s tooth” and comes from the French term dent de lion, a reference to their jagged edges. Other languages have exotic names for the dandelion as well. They include butter flowers, blow flowers, drop fluff, and the bearded grandfather. Many names reference its bitterness when consumed, including horse flower: It’s said to taste so awful that only horses would eat it.

Scientists

Many words related to nature can be traced back to scientists. Not only do scientists name things, but they’re often the ones exploring the natural world and discovering, researching, and classifying new things to be named. Scientists can have a wide range of specialties depending on whether they study the land, sea, or air. For example, oceanographers are scientists of the ocean, while astrophysicists are scientists of space.

Nature Lovers

Nature lovers are exactly what they sound like: people who love nature. They might be avid hikers, bikers, or mountain climbers, or they might enjoy outdoor hobbies like gardening or bird watching. The term “nature lover” is often used in conjunction with other people-describing nature words like “green thumb” (the ability to grow plants well) or “tree hugger” (a person who believes strongly in conservationism).

Cave

Caves are openings in the rocks and cliffs of the Earth that you can explore. They’re often quite old, and some of the earliest drawings from ancient civilizations have been discovered in caves. Another common word for these openings is “caverns,” but there’s an ongoing debate about whether caves and caverns are the same. What do you think?

Sand

Another wonderfully figurative word, sand is much more than just a term to describe the landscapes of beaches and deserts. For example, you can describe the sands of time or talk about something as small as a grain of sand. You can “bury your head in the sand” to ignore bad news or “draw a line in the sand” to declare a point of no return. It’s a nature word that doesn’t actually have to describe nature at all.

Earth

There are two ways to use this word. The first is with a capital letter, Earth, to talk about the planet Earth. The second is with a lowercase letter, earth, to use as a synonym for “dirt” or “soil.” The solar system has Earth, but your garden has earth. You exist on the Earth, but you dig into the earth to find fossils.

Fauna

Fauna is a scientific term that refers to the animals of a particular region. It stems from Fauna, the Roman goddess of earth and fertility, who was the sister of Faunus, the Roman god of forests, plains, and fields. The plant equivalent of the term is “flora,” and they’re frequently used together when describing something like “the flora and fauna of the area.” This means the plants and animals of the area.

Landscape

In the context of nature, a landscape is all elements of a place that you can see. For example, a landscape of the Amazon might include jungle trees and winding rivers. In other contexts, you can use landscape as a metaphor or reference to a broad area of something: “The cultural landscape was exciting.” You might also hear landscape or landscaping used as a verb to describe the beautification of a yard.

Alpenglow

If you’re looking for rare words related to nature, consider alpenglow. It describes the hazy reddish appearance of mountain peaks during sunrise and sunset. Rather than being golden with direct rays from the sun, they’re red with refracted light from snow and ice crystals. You might also see alpenglow called alpine glow or its native German alpenglühn. In Italian, it’s called enrosadira or “turning pink/rosy.”

Photosynthesis

You probably learned about photosynthesis in school, but did you ever stop and truly think about what it means? How amazing is it that plants can turn sunlight into energy? You don’t even have to be familiar with the scientific process behind the conversion of water, sunlight, and carbon monoxide. Just knowing that flowers can taste the sun is a miracle of nature.
