What Is Lorem Ipsum Text?
Lorem Ipsum, also sometimes called Lipsum, is dummy text used by graphic designers, marketers, and others to simulate real-looking text. It’s widely used in wireframes, mockups, and other visual designs where the actual copy text does not matter or has not yet been written.
Lorem’s text is derived from parts of Cicero’s “De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. This work discusses ethics theories in Hellenistic philosophy.
The standard Lorem Ipsum passage has been used since the 1500s when an unknown printer scrambled the original text to make a type specimen book. Below is the original text that has been used since the 1500s:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.
The text itself is designed to have a more-or-less normal distribution of letters (as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here,’ making it look like readable English) that does not distract the reader from the design being shown. Since the text is mostly incomprehensible, the brain does not try to make sense of it by reading it. This makes Lorem Ipsum ideal for filling in text blocks to show the visual form of a document or a typeface without relying on meaningful content. Lorem Ipsum encourages designers to focus on design and layout rather than the text.
