There are many types of kitchen layouts. You have the one-wall design, which is common in small studio apartments, the assembly layout in restaurants, and, of course, the island modular kitchen style for larger living spaces. In any case, no matter what kitchen layout you have, you’ll find most cooking spaces have several words related to kitchen in common.
Related:
Cupboard
Think of a cupboard like a tiny closet. But cupboards can have one or two doors or no doors at all. You might use this space to display your favorite dishes, cups, and bowls. A cupboard can also store (and hide from view) supplies like pots and pans. In a professional kitchen, cupboards are often made of stainless steel. The cupboards in your house, however, are likely made of wood.
Colander
You might refer to a colander as a “strainer.” This kitchen utensil, which is either made of metal, aluminum, or plastic, features perforations or holes that allow water to flow out.
This design is the very reason why home or professional chefs use it to strain pasta or vegetables and rinse fresh produce.
Cutlery
Utensils you use to prepare, serve, or eat food are known as cutlery. You might come from a place where people call it “flatware” or “silverware.” These words related to kitchen include knives, spoons, forks, and more. Some people differentiate between flatware and cutlery by saying that the latter includes knives while the former does not.
Rolling Pin
A basic overview of kitchen vocabulary will most likely include “rolling pin.” This kitchen utensil is cylindrical and often has handles on each end. Some are made of wood, while others are ceramic with intricate designs on them that become imprinted in dough when you roll it out. You might have a rolling pin that’s pretty enough to display as part of your home decor rather than keep hidden away in a drawer.
Stove
A stove is a device you can use to cook food by placing it inside (in an oven) or on top. If you own a cabin or live in a rural area, you might also have a wood stove. This is a similar device that you can use to heat your home as well as to cook food. A stove is fueled by gas, wood, or electricity.
Baking
If you’re using an oven, hot stones, or hot ash to prepare food, you are baking it. The term “baking” is typically related to pastries like bread and cookies. However, you might also say that you are “baking” a casserole in the oven.
Refrigerator
Refrigerator is one of the most basic words related to kitchen you can find. As you might already know, a refrigerator is an appliance that is designed to keep food cold and extend its shelf life. For instance, if you keep fresh meat at room temperature, it will most certainly go bad.
Long ago, people used cool stream waters or spaces dug underground or in a hillside to refrigerate and chill their food. Today, you can buy a refrigerator that has a push-button system to get a drink of water or to make ice cubes for your drink. A refrigerator runs on electricity and typically contains a cooling space, as well as a freezer.
Knife
Any sharp-edged kitchen tool that you use to cut, slice, chop, or dice ingredients is a knife. There are different types of knives. You have a bread knife that features a serrated (jagged) edge, a small paring knife for slicing fruit, and a carving knife to cut meat, such as your Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas ham.
Frying Pan
If you ate an egg this morning for breakfast, you probably cooked it in a frying pan. It is a common kitchen device that is often made of cast iron, stainless steel, and other metal. It usually has a long handle and may come with a lid to cover the food and keep grease from spattering onto your stovetop.
