Vocabulary word lists come in handy at times. For example, you might be learning English as a second language. Maybe you’re a student with homework to list words on a particular topic, such as “words related to home.” If that’s the case, you’ll find several words in this post to help get you started.
Related:
Residence
There are various ways to describe a home, such as “shelter,” “abode,” or “domicile.” Residence is another word with a similar meaning. It is typically used to describe the place where a person lives or resides. A real estate agent providing a tour might say that the residence includes several special features, such as an in-ground swimming pool.
Habitat
You’ll want to include “habitat” in a basic list of words related to home, as well. This word differs slightly in meaning from “residence.” You might use this word when referring to the natural environment of a particular plant or animal. You can also say “habitat,” however, in reference to any biological population, including a particular group of people.
Childhood
If you are an adult, you can look back on the years of your life before you reached adulthood. Most people consider age 18 to be the milestone for adulthood. The years prior to that are commonly referred to as your childhood. Some people, however, associate the word “childhood” with the time in a person’s life preceding puberty. Others include the teenage years (prior to 18) as part of the childhood era.
Hometown
When you speak of your hometown, it could mean one of two things. This word is often used to identify the place of your birth and early childhood years. It’s also acceptable, however, to call the place where you currently reside your “hometown.” People often write songs about their hometowns or cheer for their hometown teams at sports events.
Homestead
Some words related to home carry historical context. This is true for the word “homestead,” for instance. This word refers to land that people known as “settlers” or “squatters” came to own under certain acts of the U.S. Government. Such people would acquire a homestead by agreeing to farm the land. The federal government hoped this would expand the West and boost the economy. You can also use the word homestead can also to describe a house, farmhouse, or an outbuilding on a piece of land.
Charming
If you’re a fan of Disney movies, you’re probably familiar with Prince Charming. However, this word is not only limited to fairytales. You can use “charming” to describe a home, as well. It’s a way of saying a particular house has unique qualities or character that set it apart from other homes.
Comfortable
There are many attributes of a home that can make you feel comfortable. You might describe a home this way if you feel relaxed and at peace when you enter it. Perhaps you like the arrangement of the furniture or the artwork and decor throughout the house. When you feel at ease in a home, you can say that it is comfortable.
Bungalow
A bungalow is typically smaller than the average single-family home because it has one floor of living space. However, some bungalow homeowners maximize their lot area.
Family
The words “home” and “family” are often associated with each other. In its strictest sense, a family is a group of descendants who are born of a common ancestor. However, many people use the word family to describe a group of people who share a home and who love and care for one another. They may not necessarily be biologically related. Two or more people associated by birth, adoption, marriage, or chosen relationship form a family.
