100+ Words About Volcanoes

You may not have witnessed a volcano erupt, but learning words related to volcanoes can come in handy during conversations or when you are writing an essay. So, without further ado, here are words about volcanoes, some of which you can use even if the conversation is not about volcanoes!

Eruption

Imagine a volcanic explosion. You see hot, molten lava spew forth with a vengeance. This is known as an eruption. And, as we’ve mentioned earlier, this word doesn’t only apply to volcanoes. You can also use the word “eruption” to signify a sudden start. For instance, There was an eruption of protesters in the town hall.”

Crater

A crater is a bowl-shaped depression that curves downward into the ground. It is a result of a blast coming from a volcano.

However, keep in mind that not all craters are due to a volcanic eruption. Other causes are meteorites and explosions. For instance, the famous crater discovered off the coast of Mexico wasn’t a volcano but a meteorite collision.

Vent

When you need fresh air or to improve airflow, you use a vent. But did you know that volcanoes also use them? A volcanic vent is where gases, rocks, and ash flow are released as lava. In short, the volcano is letting off steam. It’s the center where everything flows outwards.

Pyroclastics

If you’ve ever witnessed a volcanic explosion, you not only saw lava and gases. You most likely saw bits or fragments of rock material flowing right along with the lava. These are known as pyroclastics, which are partially made of solid magma and bits of rock material. A good synonym for pyroclastics is tephra. The only difference is that tephra is more about ash.

Lahar

Lahar is another of those words about volcanoes that’s Indonesian for “mud flow” or “debris flow.” And that’s precisely what it means.

If you’re in an area with heavy rainfall, you’re most likely to witness this phenomenon. Because of the intense heat, these flows are deadly and can destroy an entire area. Primary lahars occur during an active eruption. But don’t be fooled by a sleeping volcano. Secondary lahars happen when a volcano is dormant. All it takes is a heavy downpour.

Caldera

If you visit Ecuador, be sure to check out the Laguna del Quiltoa. This round, circular shape forms a boundary surrounding a deep, green lake. But its peaceful demeanor belies the fact that it was once the result of exploding magma from a boiling chamber. In short, you’re looking at a caldera.

Fissure

Have you ever seen a crack open inside a volcano? This is known as a fissure. These tiny splits still emit volcanic lava, but not as severely as a full-blown eruption. Plus, it only takes a few days for them to cool down.

Andesite

If you’ve ever visited the Andes of South America, you may have noticed small or medium-sized rocks. Andesite lava forms these stones, which are versatile and can be used as fillers for an outdoor construction project. You can also make painted rocks with them.

Tephra

Pyroclastic deposits from eruptions are known as tephra. You’ll see some of these lagging around old volcanic sites like Mount St. Helen and even Mount Vesuvius. With Mount Vesuvius, you’ll see the ancient remnants of ash that covered Pompeii on impact. That’s the tephra we’re talking about.

Tremor

Do you remember Jurassic Park? There was a scene where the kids were snacking on jello. The little girl picks up a spoonful only to find it shaking without any effort on her part. Then, there’s a stomping noise from the t-rex outside. This is known as a tremor.

But in volcano language, a tremor happens when a volcano is active in your area.

In some cases, it’s one of those words about volcanoes that serves as a warning. Some are mild, while others are moderate. But severe tremors are warning signs of an impeding eruption.
