Lava Cake

If you want an explosion of gooey chocolate with every bite, lava cakes should be at the top of your must-try desserts list. At first glance, it looks like just your regular chocolate cake, but once you cut into it, its warm, molten center oozes out. And, believe it or not, it is made with just chocolate, butter, eggs, sugar, and flour.

So, how do you make the center oozing with chocolate? Well, there are two ways—you either underbake the batter or you stick a chocolate in the center (it will melt when you bake it).

Laddoo / Laddu

Ladoo (or laddu/laddoo) is a small, sweet, round dessert from India. The base changes depending on where you are; some versions are nutty and toasted, others are light and syrupy, and some are packed with coconut or spices. Some laddoos that you can try are coconut laddoo, motichoor laddoo, beson laddoo, and boondi laddoo.

Fun Fact: Laddoo is served during Dilawi, one of India’s major celebrations.

Linzer Torte is a delicious tart that you have to try at least once in your life. This tart, which has a distinct lattice top by the way, is made with a nutty almond-based dough, lightly spiced, and layered with tart raspberry jam that cuts through the richness.

Fun Fact: The Linzer Torte is named after Linz, Austria, where it originated. The exact person behind this tasty dessert is unknown, but it is believed to be one of the oldest documented recipes, dating back to 1653.

Lamingtons

Lamingtons are bite-sized sponge cakes coated in chocolate and then rolled in grated coconut. Their exact origins remain debated. Some say a maid accidentally dropped cake into melted chocolate, while others credit French-born chef Armand Galland, who improvised to impress unexpected guests.

Lemon Meringue Pie

Lemon meringue pie is a classic American dessert with roots in early 19th-century Philadelphia.

Crafted by pastry pioneer Elizabeth Goodfellow, this dessert, as its name suggests, features a traditional or graham cracker crust, filled with tangy lemon custard, and topped with fluffy meringue. How about the taste, you ask? Well, the tanginess of the lemon tames the sweet flavor of the meringue.

Fun Fact: August 15 is National Lemon Meringue Pie Day.

Leche Flan

Leche Flan doesn’t look flashy, but it’s a tastytreat, especially for those with a sweet tooth. This rich, velvety custard is the Filipino take on Spanish flan, made extra creamy with condensed and evaporated milk and finished with a glossy caramel top.

Ladyfingers

Love tiramisu? Ladyfingers, also called savoiardi, are one key ingredient! This dessert that starts with the letter L is essentially just like a cookie, but it has a porous, sponge-like texture inside — that’s why it can soak up coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.

Lemon Tart

The tarte au citron, also known as lemon tart, is made of a combination of crisp, sweet pastry and a silky, custard-like lemon curd (usually made from lemon juice and lemon zest. As for its taste, it’s not overly sweet and sour.

Lemon tart and lemon meringue pie are different, by the way.
