100+ Cleaning Words

People may have different opinions about housework, but cleaning is a part and fact of life for everyone. And, no matter how long you have performed these tasks, you may be using the wrong cleaning words.

Filth

If you don’t regularly clean, everything will become dirty over time. And, the longer you keep putting off your cleaning chores, that layer of dirt and dust will eventually be filth, a more excessive and disgusting amount of dirt and dust.

Not only do filthy items look unappealing, but they also have a terrible odor, which can attract pests like cockroaches and rodents. They also become a breeding ground for bacteria and germs!

Mop

Whether you like mopping or not, one thing’s for sure: having a mop can make this chore less tedious. Just imagine being on all fours, mopping the floor by hand – your back will hate you, and you’ll spend hours of your weekend that should be your rest day.

With a mop, you get to clean your apartment’s floor without bending down. Many people argue that a mop just pushes filth around, but with the right mopping technique, you don’t have to worry about germs and bacteria lurking on your floor.

Disinfectant

Disinfectants kill bacteria and viruses and reduce the risk of spreading illnesses. Most cleaners use alcohol-based products or chlorine bleach for this purpose. To be more effective, you should clean and sanitize the area first and then disinfect it.

Soap

You use soap every day, but did you know that there are different types of soap? There are moisturizing soaps, antibacterial soaps, bar soaps, and natural soap, to name a few! Whatever you prefer to use, remember soaps made for personal use shouldn’t be used for cleaning your house.

Alcohol

For many, using alcohol is part of their cleaning regimen because this disinfectant is cheap but effective in killing germs.

Many people think that a higher isopropyl alcohol concentration is better for cleaning. However, 70% isopropyl alcohol is enough to kill most bacteria and viruses. Plus, you don’t have to dilute it with water because manufacturers already mix it with 30% purified water.

Stains

Any unwanted discoloration is a stain that can affect porous and non-porous items. For example, you’ve accidentally spilled red wine on your carpet, and now you have a stain that you are frantically trying to remove!

While most people throw out items with stains or use strong chemicals, some DIY household cleaning solutions, like dishwashing liquid and vinegar, can effectively eliminate even the most stubborn of stains.

Contamination

Cleaning words like contamination do not describe most household messes but are necessary for safety reasons to understand. A contaminated home is unsafe and could include dangerous biological hazards. It can occur from issues like pest infestations, a buildup of food or other debris, or the growth of black mold.

Cleaning a contaminated room requires multiple steps, often using harsh or strong chemicals in the process.

Sanitation

Every time you vacuum to clean the food crumbs off the carpet or when you wipe off dirt on the bookshelves, you are ensuring the “sanitation” of the living room.

Important places and things to sanitize include kitchens and bathrooms and frequently touched items like doorknobs and light switches.

Fun Fact: Sanitizing doesn’t clean everything; it only kills bacteria. If you want to eliminate viruses, you need to disinfect, which is another cleaning word.
