Magic
Magic is a supernatural power that allows you to influence an event, object, or another person. According to the fantasy genre, there are different sources of magic. It can be a gift from nature, or it can come from a supernatural being like a god or a demon. You can also be born with the power to create and control magic.
Real-life magicians do not have magical abilities. The magic they create is more of an illusion using sleight of hand.
Witchcraft
When we hear the word “witchcraft,” we think of witches casting spells or brewing potions. But what is it? Well, witchcraft is a type of magic that witches practice.
In history, witchcraft is believed to be evil in nature. It has been blamed for causing strange diseases or strange events to happen in people’s lives.
Coven
A list of witch words is not complete without the word coven. A coven is a group of witches. The word came from the Latin word coventus, which means assembly. Because of this, a coven could also mean an assembly of witches. This assembly could have thirteen witches. Why this number? According to popular belief, the number 13 is bad luck.
A supreme witch is the leader of a coven. This witch could be the main source of the coven’s power. In some films or books, when the leader is defeated, the rest of the coven loses its powers.
In less witchy terms, you can use the word coven to describe a group of people who have similar interests.
Hex
The word hex came from the Old German word hexe, which means witch. In modern terms, a hex means casting a spell on someone. This spell is usually related to something evil, for example, a curse.
Hexes can come in many forms. A hex can give you boils and sores all over your body. You may also see scary things that other people cannot see. In short, hexes can either torment a person physically or psychologically.
Rituals
People practice rituals in their lives. A ritual is a traditional practice or a series of actions done in a particular order. Getting out of bed, brushing your teeth, dressing up, and eating breakfast is an example of a morning ritual.
Witches are known to have magical rituals, which involve lighting candles, burning sage, reciting prayers, or dancing around fires. Some extreme cases of rituals are believed to include animal sacrifices. Witches do these rituals to either strengthen their powers, worship the devil, or hex someone.
Curses
When you hear the word curse, how would you define it? We think of a curse as a swear word or a bad word. In this witch words list, we describe a curse as a hex or magical spell to hurt a person.
Curses are powerful and supposed to be hard to get rid of. The victim may need to do a specific ritual or ask forgiveness from the witch who cast it.
Grimoire
Did you know that witches need books to practice witchcraft? These magical textbooks are called grimoires. Witches use this as a guide to do certain kinds of magic.
A grimoire can contain directions on how to cast spells or step-by-step instructions on how to complete magical rituals. Some also offer directions on how to cast protective spells or how to get rid of curses. It may sound unreal, but grimoires exist in the real world, and many have been written throughout history. The most popular one is called the Lesser Key of Solomon, written around the 16th century.
Book of Shadows
A popular type of grimoire is called The Book of Shadows. Gerald Gardner, the “Father of Wicca,” introduced the first and most famous Book of Shadows in the late 1940s. This book contains passages and verses about witchcraft and Wicca, the religion of witches.
In popular culture, a book of shadows can have lists of spells and curses, guides for rituals, recipes for potions, and even the laws of magic. Today, modern witches create their own book of shadows for their personal use. You can even make one yourself.
