If you are a new fan, being familiar with basketball words and phrases will help you enjoy the game even more. Here is a list of common basketball terms you’ll hear.

1. Sixth Man
You might assume that the five players who start the game are the only ones who matter, but the sixth man is often a team’s most valuable asset off the bench.
So, what’s the role of the sixth man? Well, this player is not just a simple backup. The sixth man enters towards the end of the first quarter, providing a massive burst of energy or scoring while one of the starters rests.
The question now is, how valuable is a sixth man? Well, the National Basketball Association (NBA) has an annual Sixth Man of the Year award, which began in the 1982-83 season. For 2026, the winner is San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson.
2. Three-Point Line
When you look at a basketball court’s floor, you will find a large, semi-circular arc at each side. This is what you call the three-point line. If you stand behind this boundary and sink a basket, your team earns three points instead of the usual two.
3. Backcourt
The backcourt refers to the half of the court that contains a team’s own basket. Basically, it is the defensive side where you’re protecting your lead or trying to stop points.
Once a team brings the ball past half court, they’re not allowed to go back to the backcourt with it. If they do, a referee will call a backcourt violation.
4. Jump Shot
When you leap into the air and take a shot at the peak of the jump, that’s what you call a jump shot. So, why jump when you can throw the ball when your feet are on the floor? Well, the reason is pretty simple: jumping makes it harder for a defender to block your attempt.
5. Buzzer Beater
Ever watched a game when there are just a few seconds left, and one player (from the expected losing team) takes a three-point shot that goes in? Well, you just witnessed a buzzer-beater!
This basketball term applies when the ball is in flight before the game period ends, and the points count as long as the player released it before the clock turns to zero.
6. Three-Pointer
Earlier, we discussed what a three-point line is. Now, if you take a shot behind the arc, that is what you call a three-pointer shot. A three-pointer and a “triple” are the same thing.
7. Box Out
Boxing out is a technique players (often the center, power forward, or forward) use to gain a better rebounding position. They put their bodies in front of the opponent and use their backsides to create space from the basket.
8. Crossovers
A crossover is a dribbling move where you quickly bounce the ball from one hand to the other in front of your body. When you execute this move with enough speed and precision, you can “break the ankles” of a defender, meaning they lose their balance entirely while you drive to the hoop.
9. Dagger
A dagger is a shot or play that ends the opponent’s hope of winning, like when a team is down by two with 30 seconds left and the opposing point guard hits a long jumper to make it a four-point game.
10. Brick
In the world of basketball words, calling a shot a brick is a way to describe a particularly bad miss that clanks loudly off the rim or backboard.
Unlike a “swish” that goes through the net perfectly, a brick usually has too much force or a flat trajectory, causing it to bounce away aggressively. You want to avoid these at all costs because they often lead to long rebounds and fast breaks for the other team.
11. Behind the Arc
Announcers often use the phrase “behind the arc.” This just means that a player is in the three-point territory, either take a three-point shot or force the defense to cover the outer perimeter.
12. Overtime
When the score is tied at the end of the 4th quarter, the game goes to overtime (OT). Teams keep playing OT until someone comes out ahead, which means games can theoretically go on forever if both sides keep matching each other. In the NBA, each overtime period is five minutes long.
13. Crossover Step
A crossover step is where you step across your body with your lead foot to explode past a defender. Unlike a simple dribble move, this footwork creates an advantageous angle, with your frame shielding the ball. You often use this after a pump fake or a triple-threat position to catch your opponent off guard.
14. Alley-oop
An alley-oop is one of the flashiest plays in basketball, where one player strikes the ball up near the basket, and a teammate catches it in the air and dunks it or lays it in before landing.
