100+ Sports Words

If you are not a sports fan, sports words can be confusing. You might know some common ones like coach and champion, but other sports words sound foreign, like albatross or double eagle in golf. If you want to have a better understanding of what’s going on in a sports game, here is a set of sports and their definitions. We’ve also included a long list of words related to sports at the bottom.

Referee

A referee is an official who watches a game to ensure players adhere to the sport’s rules. In most sports, a referee does not intervene unless a rule is violated. However, there are some instances in which the referee can stop or pause a match either because of interference from fans or if there is an injured player.

Most people think that there is only one referee. However, depending on the sport, there are multiple referees. For instance, in boxing, there is only one. But in basketball, there are two.

Coach

Whether it’s an individual sport like golf or a team sport like basketball, athletes have a coach. A coach is responsible for training and developing the skills of an athlete and strategizing how to defeat the opponent.

Champion

In sports, there is a ranking system. If you won the most matches throughout a season or won a tournament, you are the champion. For instance, in the NBA, you have the playoffs in which different teams compete for the champion title.

Arena

The Ancient Romans defined an arena as a theater of combat. In modern sports, however, the word refers to an enclosed structure with a field of play surrounded by tiers of seats for spectators. A stadium, unlike an arena, is open to the elements.

Tournament

In order to have a champion in any sports event, players or teams go through a tournament. A tournament is basically when players or teams compete with each other. To move up in the game and continue competing for the championship title, they should defeat their opponent. The last two athletes or teams to make it through the initial rounds will compete in the last game or, as sports fans say, “finals.”

Fans

The word fan in sports is short for fanatic. Fans are a group of people who are enthusiastic supporters of a team or player. However, there are some instances in which fans can be irrational or overly emotional about the team or player they support.

Penalty

A penalty in sports is much the same as in everyday life. It is a punishment imposed for violation of a rule. Most penalties are to prevent injury, while others are to preserve the spirit or intent of the game. Minor penalties are usually instantaneous or brief, whereas severe or repeated infractions can result in more extended penalties or eviction of the offending player from the game.

Offense

A team or player is on offense when they are in the position to score points or a goal. In some sports, a team or player moves between offensive and defensive play from moment to moment. In other games, athletes are given a set number of plays to score or achieve offensive progress. If they fail to score or make sufficient progress, their competitor will take the offensive and attempt to score.

League

A sports league is a collection of teams or players of relatively equal ability who form an association for competition. The members of a league will compete with each other to gain points and compete in a tournament.
