Demise
This is a more formal way to say death. It appears in obituaries and legal documents. If you want to impress someone, you can always add that it comes from the French word “demettre,” which means to send away. Demise can also apply to the end of something, such as the demise of drive-in movies.
Cemetery
Cemetery is the final resting place of those who have died. You may wonder, “Where did the whole idea of cemeteries come from?” It’s believed to have started in the 7th century. Surprisingly, only the church was allowed to bury the dead, but nowadays, cemeteries operate independently of churches to accommodate all cultures and religions.
Mortality
Among the various words related to death, mortality has two meanings. The first definition is that you will eventually die, while the second one is for the total deaths in a population. For instance, there’s infant mortality or Covid mortality.
Eulogy
When at a funeral, someone will often get up and say nice things about the person who has died. They might open with a poem or a scripture reading. A eulogy, therefore, is a speech to praise or honor the dead person. A close friend or relative often gives the eulogy.
Funeral

Coffin
A coffin is a six-sided wooden box that is wider at the top and narrow at the bottom. This is where a deceased loved one is placed for the funeral service.
Burial
After the church funeral ceremony ends, there is a vehicle procession to the cemetery, where the burial will occur. During a burial, close family and friends say their last words before the coffin is lowered to the ground.
Gloomy
When you hear the word, you associate it with dark and depressing, like gloomy weather or a gloomy house. Despair and lack of hope also come to mind, especially concerning death.
Grim Reaper
Of all the words related to death, Grim Reaper in the media. If you don’t know what a Grim Reaper is, it is a mythological skeletal character with a black hooded cloak and a scary scythe.
Grim Reaper is also known as Thanatos, the Greek word for death. He gets his moniker from the fact that he uses the scythe to “reap human souls,” thus delivering them to the afterlife.
