Liberty

Liberty is the ability to do as you please without interference from others. It also means being free from arbitrary constraints or barriers standing in the way of living life as you choose, like unreasonable laws of restraint. Keep in mind that it does not mean acting selfishly or in a way that harms others. If you genuinely experience true liberty, you treat others equitably because that means you are not an obstacle to freedom for them.

Autonomy

Autonomy means you govern yourself independently of your place in society, political institutions, and connections with others. Moral autonomy refers to how you self-govern. Your actions are, as the term implies, based on your personal values or morals. In comparison, freedom is your ability to behave without constraints, while autonomy refers to the drivers, like morals, that move you to behave in a certain way.

Human Rights

Human rights exist due to your sheer existence as a human being. You possess universal rights without regard to race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, religion, and place of birth. You have the right to education, work, life, liberty, opinions, and expression, plus freedom from torture and slavery. Human rights also mean you can live with dignity and without fear and discrimination.

Emancipation

Emancipation means being released from a previous restraint, whether political, legal, social, or familial. Though this term is frequently used as a historical one referring to the freeing of slaves from bondage, there are many other ways to experience emancipation. For example, you may experience emancipation from discrimination that has held you back from advancing a career or participating equally in society.

Democracy

Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible members of society have a say in how the government is run. For practical reasons, people vote for elected representatives to serve as their “”voice”” in a governing body. This is why the U.S. is a representative democracy, which means you can vote for anyone you believe will represent your values, concerns, and ideas.

Rights

You also have liberties and civil rights bestowed in a free society. Rights, as one of the words related to freedom, refers to the legal extension of freedom. For example, per the U.S. Constitution, you have the right to assembly, free speech, petitions, and religion. Today, additional rights are protected by law, like your right to pay, unionize and live without discrimination.

Freedom of Speech

Freedom of speech means you can speak your ideas or opinions without fear of retaliation or censorship. It also includes the freedom not to speak while expressing your opinion, like wearing an armband or tee shirt to protest a war. However, keep in mind that freedom of speech doesn’t mean you can say anything you want. For example, your speech cannot incite lawlessness, like rioting, or promote illegal activities like buying and using illegal drugs.

Compulsion

Compulsion in the context of freedom is viewed through two perspectives. One is that you are voluntarily compelled to protect your freedoms, including human, moral, political, and other rights. You may be forced to fight for other people’s equality or freedoms or utilize your freedom of speech to defend your human rights.

The other side of compulsion is that you are externally compelled to violate your freedoms. For example, specific laws force you to pay taxes that support a cause you do not believe in.
