100+ Marketing Words

You might have already come across and even interacted with many online marketing efforts, but do you know what they really are? Let’s go through the meaning of the most commonly used marketing words.

Prospects

In the marketing world, any potential customers are called prospects. Depending on the goal of a marketing initiative, prospects can be based on age group, income bracket, needs, preferences, or behavior.

Landing Page

A landing page is the page people “land on” after clicking an email or ad. Keep in mind that the landing page is different from the rest of the website because it has a call to action.

The call to action is something to keep the customer’s interest and draw them in. Examples would be to fill out a form or download an ebook. Landing pages narrow down to a single focus rather than provide customers with numerous links to products and services.

Visitors

Visitor is the most basic of marketing words. A visitor is simply someone who visits your website. You want to track the number of visitors, how often they come back, and their favorite links.

Buyer Personas

A buyer persona is a description of a potential customer. However, it is purely fictional. You come up with the buyer persona based on the marketing research. For example, you may come up with a buyer persona for a 34-year-old buying their first house. What are they like? What will they be looking for? Creating a buyer persona gives you the chance to test out multiple scenarios and marketing strategies.

Click-Through Rates

Click-through rate (CTR) stands for the number of times visitors click on an ad. Marketers determine CTRs by dividing the number of clicks by the number of impressions, i.e., potential views. That number is then multiplied by one hundred. CTRs help you to understand if you need to change your advertising tactics.

Marketing Copy

Marketing copy can be long or short, highly technical, or use simple language. Its goal is to connect with a customer’s emotions or provide a resolution to a problem. Basically, a marketing copy uses the right words to encourage or convert prospects to customers.

Digital Marketing

Unlike traditional marketing (brochures, flyers, and billboards), digital marketing involves using social media, ads, emails, websites, and videos to reach prospects. For instance, if you watch a YouTube video, you will most likely come across an ad in the beginning or in the middle of the video. Another example would be a sponsored post you see on your Facebook newsfeed.

Brand Awareness

Brand awareness is how well prospects know your brand. Have they heard of your company? What do they think of your brand? And how does your company stack up to similar companies?

Engagement

Engagement encompasses other marketing words in its definition. It is a marketing strategy meant to engage with customers. Examples are a thank you email that a customer receives after making a purchase or personalized social media ads. In short, engagement helps to create a loyal following, which in turn boosts brand awareness.

Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO in short) is another popular marketing word. It involves using different tactics to improve a website’s visibility in a search engine like Google.
