100+ Creativity Words

Creativity is, without a doubt, a highly valuable asset. Although we often associate it with the arts, this word is a plus in many other mediums, including the business world. Here are several creativity words to get you started.

Inspiration

Creative words wouldn’t be complete without inspiration. Most creative people benefit from some degree of inspiration. Even if you’re talented at something, it’s hard to apply creativity to it without an idea to motivate you. A classic example of this is an author struggling with writer’s block.

Inspiration can come from many different sources. Examples include an idea randomly popping into your head and witnessing something that triggers your creative instincts.

Ingenuity

Those possessing ingenuity are both clever and original. Often, those traits pair with or lead to being inventive. They make people say, “Why didn’t I think of that?” (Because they possess more ingenuity).

Ingenious people are the ones who come up with unique and/or innovative ideas and solutions. They’re the kinds of people who amaze audiences and readers with gripping plots, who create market-changing products, etc. In addition, they find new and better ways to do things. A good example is a top math student who discovers a more efficient way to solve a problem.

Vision

It’s easy to think vision is interchangeable with inspiration and ingenuity, and people with vision often do have them both. What makes vision its own category of creativity is that it looks ahead into the future.

Say someone gets an inspiration for a new product. If that someone also has ingenuity, he or she can bring it to reality. Someone with vision, though, sees how to apply that product, where it can lead, and how it can effect change.

A lot of people considered to be creative geniuses possess inspiration, ingenuity, and vision. Many movie directors, musicians, and successful entrepreneurs are creative geniuses.

Open-Mindedness

We often associate open-mindedness with tolerance, but it’s a form of creativity as well. To be open-minded means that you are not only tolerant of different ideas but also receptive to them. In other words, you’re constantly open to learning new things if you’re open-minded.

It’s pretty easy to see how open-mindedness boosts creativity. By learning new things and applying different viewpoints, your creativity becomes more productive and diverse. People will also be more open to you, in turn, and will like working with you.

Eccentricity

Eccentric and unorthodox (a little below) are similar to one another and often used as synonyms. However, there are some distinctions between the two.

Similar to other creativity words, Eccentric typically describes personalities or behaviors. Usually, it refers to unusual actions or traits that many might describe as odd or unnecessary. Sometimes eccentric behavior can be amusing or perplexing; it does not by definition imply disordered behavior, though.

There’s always been a strong correlation between eccentricity and creativity, and eccentricity often shapes it. That’s not to say all or most creative people are eccentric, but a lot of eccentric people are creative.

Visionary

As an adjective, visionary simply describes a person who possesses vision. There are a couple of other ways to use the word, and both are nouns.

First, a visionary is a person who has a strong streak of creative vision and applies it with imagination or wisdom. The other application has connections to many of the world’s traditions. In that context, a visionary is someone others believe can see the future or communicate with the supernatural.

Unorthodox

An unorthodox person, like an eccentric person, does things differently. The main difference is that unorthodox people often don’t follow rules, traditions, and standard codes or expectations of conduct. By contrast, eccentric habits or behavior are more likely to be described as quirky.

People who take unorthodox approaches to things have their own ways of doing them. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and in fact, it can lead to innovation and go with ingenuity. Many unorthodox people see and think about the world differently, and they can be both creative and effective.

Eclecticism

Last on our creativity words list is eclecticism. Similarly to open-minded people, eclectic people get ideas, styles, and tastes from a broad range of diverse sources. As with open-mindedness, eclecticism can help a person expand and improve his creativity or creative works.

Eclectic can also refer to someone’s preferences. For example, a person whose music and video collections include a wide variety of genres or styles has eclectic tastes.
