The Methodology

To determine if certain states cheated more at Wordle, we analyzed the data from nearly 83,000 users of the Capitalize My Title Word Finder tool. This tool helps people find possible Wordle solutions based on queries about letters contained in words such as “5-letter words containing eual” or “5 letter words starting with y.”

We analyzed users coming to our site between July 21, 2022 and October 20, 2022 in search of Wordle help. We then normalized the data by state populations according to 2020 census data so that states that had a larger population, and therefore more total users, were not disproportionately counted in the data.

After analyzing the data over the last three months, we determined that the top five states that cheat at Wordle are: Montana, Colorado, Oklahoma, Virginia, and Illinois.

The overall percentage of cheaters in each state compared to its overall population was less than 0.06%. Still, when the total number of Wordle players is less than 1% of the population, this percentage is sizeable.

The States Who Need the Least Help With Wordle

We also analyzed the states that cheat the least. The top five most honest states are Alaska, Rhode Island, North Dakota, Louisiana, and New Mexico.

While the populations are small in some of these states (Alaska and North Dakota each have fewer than 800K residents), the analysis took population size into account.

About Wordle

Wordle is a simple daily word game that gives players 6 chances to guess a 5-letter word. Each guess provides clues as to what the word is by turning correctly placed letters green, incorrectly placed letters yellow, and letters not in the word grey.

Wordle was originally created by Josh Wardle, a software engineer, as a way for him and his partner to play a daily word game together. Once the game grew in popularity in his family’s WhatsApp chat, Wardle decided to make the game public in October 2021. According to The New York Times, “On Nov. 1, 90 people played. On Sunday, just over two months later, more than 300,000 people played.”

Since then, Wordle has become a global phenomenon. In January 2022, The New York Times purchased the game for a few million dollars (“low-seven figures”) from Josh Wardle.

The name Wordle is a play on Wardle’s last name and is the perfect name for the online game.
