If you frequent the streaming platform Twitch or play online games, you’ve probably seen an emote of Pepe the Frog with a surprised facial expression. That’s the poggers emote.

Gamers use poggers—either by typing it out or using the emote—to express excitement or to express enthusiasm. For example, if a streamer pulls off an incredible play, viewers might react by spamming poggers in the Twitch chat.

While the word poggers is closely related to pog, the two aren’t exactly the same. Poggers specifically refers to the emote or a general sense of amazement, whereas pog can refer to the physical game of Pogs or its collectible pieces

What’s the Origin of Poggers?

If poggers looks familiar, it’s because it was inspired by another popular Twitch emote—PogChamp.

The PogChamp emote features the face of Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez with a shocked expression. However, it was eventually banned from Twitch due to Guiterrez’s statement in relation to the January 6 United States Capitol attack.

Around the same time, the poggers emote we know today started to surface and gain popularity. Of course, Gootecks’ face of surprise was swapped out for Matt Furie’s “Pepe The Frog.”

When and How to Use Poggers

For example, say you’re on a Discord call with your friends playing a shooting game like Fortnite. In this scenario, your friend made a shot that was unlikely to hit but won the game. You might respond by saying poggers to express celebration or excitement and commend them.

Another common use is during gaming live streams, like those on Twitch or YouTube.

Now, consider the same scenario with the shooting game. After the streamer makes the winning shot, you might comment, ‘poggers,” or use the emoji in the Twitch chat to express your enthusiasm and disbelief. You may also use poggers directly in video game in-game chats when talking to other players.

Final Thoughts

The term poggers is one of the many Internet slang terms that originated from the online gaming community. Remember, the poggers meaning is very close to the meaning of “pogChamp” and has come from similar origins. You may not necessarily see this used in typical everyday conversations, but it is still heavily used online.
