Fun Fact: This large guardian dog comes from Hungary, where it was bred to guard farm animals from predators. 

Kishu Ken

Originally from Japan’s mountainous regions, the Kishu Ken was bred for endurance and focus for hunting wild boar. Today, this hound breed, in addition to its athletic, muscular build, is known for its high mental stimulation needs and incredible loyalty —some even say they often get attached to only one person in a household! 

Fun Fact: When you translate “ken” to English, it means “dog.”

Kerry Blue Terrier

Kerry Blue Terriers worked as hunters, herders, and guard dogs on Irish farms. You can easily identify them by their soft, curly, blue-gray coat. This breed is very affectionate, great with children, and protective. 

King Shepherd 

A King Shepherd might look like a German Shepherd, but don’t be fooled! They are different breeds, with the former being a crossbreed (they are a mix of German Shepherds and Shiloh Shepherds). And although they are larger, they have a calm temperament. These gentle giants can live for 10 to 11 years and are intelligent, devoted, friendly, and loyal.

Another native Japanese breed in our list is the Kai Ken. Known for their agility, loyalty, and intelligence, Kain Kens are incredibly rare even in their home country — some breeders might even ask up to $2,500 for a puppy.

So what makes this breed highly sought after? Well, they are affectionate, great around kids and other dogs, and excellent watchdogs. These furry friends usually live 12–15 years.
