Leadership is a quality that we are either born with or learn over time. Either way, leaders do, or should, associate with these words related to leadership.
Related:
Integrity
People of integrity say what they mean and mean what they say. Honesty and forthrightness flow from this trait. This makes a person trustworthy and deserving of followers the essence of leadership. The opposite of integrity is hypocrisy.
Pioneer
What do the first person on the moon, the first person to create a personal computer, or the first person to split the atom have in common? They are pioneers who blaze a trail of opportunities for others to follow.
Innovator
An innovator focuses on improving what’s readily available, either for better usability, lower costs, or overall function. For instance, software was around for a long time before someone taught it to learn from data, i.e., artificial intelligence. Such developments are innovations, and their sources are innovators.
Passion
Leaders are driven by passion, an intense desire to act on something. Passion, though many times associated with human love, refers to being consumed by something — an idea, a place, a goal, or, yes, another person. Accomplishment frequently comes on the heels of resistance and discouragement. It is “passion” that compels a good leader to push through toward success.
Compassion
When someone is in pain or hopeless, a leader might show that person compassion. You can be a compassionate leader by understanding, empathizing, and supporting your followers or employees.
Mentor
Leaders are not necessarily at the head of crowds, corporations, and governments. Sometimes, leadership involves a two-person relationship. In such cases, a mentor shares wisdom and provides advice to a less experienced individual, occasionally known as a protege. Such relationships might be assigned and formal, a guidance counselor and a student, for example.
Credibility
Credibility is one of those words related to leadership that is very much connected to integrity. When a leader speaks, there is an understanding that the words are true and proven. When you, as a leader, make a promise, there is an expectation that you will follow through and deliver on it. Basically, credibility means believability. Credibility is usually gained over time; leaders build a record of credibility by telling the truth and fulfilling their obligations — every time with no (or very few) exceptions. If you do these things, your word is all anyone will need to trust you.
Negotiation
Negotiation is a conversation aimed at reaching an agreement. You see nation-states negotiating in news reports over trade policies, boundary disputes, and even arms control. Businesses negotiate when considering mergers. Spouses negotiate over household chores and parenting responsibilities. In short, negotiation is a dialogue where each party determines what concessions to make to the other in order to achieve their goals or highest priorities.
