Ocean

The world has always recognized four oceans: the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian, and the Arctic. In recent decades, we now have the Antarctic. Oceans are distinguished from other bodies of water mainly because of their size; they cover a whopping 71% of the Earth’s surface. They aren’t the only places where you can enjoy the beach, but they’re by far the most prominent. Another good thing to know about oceans is that they’re all made of saltwater.

Sand

You can’t visit the beach without visiting the sand, too! It’s so closely entwined with vacation vocabulary that you’ll often hear phrases like “getting the sand between your toes” to mean “visiting the beach.” A fun fact about sand is that it comes in several different varieties depending on the shores that you’re on; it can be white, black, pink, and more. You can also enjoy many different beach activities in the sand that range from sandcastle building to sand volleyball.

Sunrise

Have you ever seen a sunrise over the water? It can be a very beautiful, memorable sight, which is why it’s included with these words related to the beach. Many people enjoy watching the sky change colors over the horizon when there’s nothing between them but open air and the vastness of the water. If you’re ever by the coast during the dawn hours, give it a visit and experience a sunrise on the beach.

Snorkeling

Snorkeling is a fun activity that can be enjoyed in many different bodies of water, so it doesn’t have to be a beach pursuit, but you’ll often see it included in these types of vocabulary lists. To “snorkel” is to breathe through a special tube while plunging your face underwater. Wearing goggles is usually part of the process too. With both pieces of equipment, you can see, breathe, and look around underwater, allowing you to observe everything from marine animals to coral and plant life.

Seashore

A seashore is exactly what it sounds like a shore on the sea. It’s one of the many places to enjoy a beach day. Other beaches can be found in oceans, lakes, and lagoons, but a seashore often has a more romantic or poetic image, so it’s frequently used in literary writing. You might also recognize this word from the famous tongue twister “Sally sells sea shells by the sea shore.” Say that three times fast!

Boardwalk

If you’ve ever been to a popular beach in a tourist town, you might have seen a boardwalk; they’re common in major cities along the coast. They’re essentially walking paths along the beach that are lined with shops, restaurants, arcades, equipment rentals, and other businesses aimed at local visitors. Some of the most well-developed boardwalks are known for having things like amusement parks right there on the coast. You can hop on a Ferris wheel and see the whole beach and boardwalk beneath you!

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must-have when you’re spending a lot of time outdoors, so you can consider it an essential word in your growing beach vocabulary. It is what you use to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. You rub it in, and it either absorbs or reflects the ultraviolet radiation coming from up high.

“Sunscreen” is sometimes used interchangeably with “sunblock” since they both serve the same purpose, but they’re different products: Sunscreen absorbs the UV rays while sunblock reflects them away entirely.

Flip-Flops

Flip-flops are a fun thing to wear and even a funner word to say. They’re the loose, lightweight sandals that you’ll often see people wearing in the summertime, so they’re definitely one of the more common beach words. Their design is typically very flat with a simple Y-shaped strap that goes between the first two toes, and this is why they “flip” and “flop” as the person walks. They’re not quite an onomatopoeia or a word that doubles as a sound, but they’re close.

Sunburn

If you’ve ever stayed out at the beach too long, you’ll be familiar with this term! Sunburn is when the rays of the sun have damaged the top layers of your skin. Common symptoms include redness, inflammation, sensitivity, pain, and blisters. Over time, sunburn can become itchy as the damaged skin starts to peel or flake off, revealing a newer layer of skin underneath. Repeated sunburns can lead to everything from permanently discolored “sun spots” to serious conditions like skin cancer, so make sure to always wear your sunscreen when you’re enjoying a beach day!
