Grammarly Is More Than a Grammar Checker Now: You Can Now Plan, Write, Cite — and Even Predict Your Grade

You’ve probably used Grammarly to squash typos and brush up on your grammar. Now, it has grown into an all-in-one writing sidekick for students. Today, we’re previewing how Grammarly helps you plan assignments, write smarter, cite sources, and even guess your grade.

New Dedicated Writing Surface Called “Docs”

Grammarly just launched a whole new space called Docs. It’s a place built for you to type, paste, and, of course, actually write. So, what makes it different from the Classic version that we came to know and love? There is an AI Chat built right in.

Accessible from the lower section or on the right panel, you can use this chat feature to ask for help with anything. Need to brainstorm? Want to create a research plan? Fix tricky sentences? AI Chat can help you out.

Best of all? It stays out of your way. You can write freely without any annoying pop-ups, but whenever you need a hand, the AI Chat is within reach (or Docs, for that matter). No need to juggle tabs anymore; everything stays in one place.

Not a fan of the new writing space? Don’t worry! Grammarly kept the Classic version so you can choose which one works for your workflow.

8 Specialized AI Agents to Help You With Your Next Assignment

Grammarly didn’t just stop at Docs. They went all-in with not one, not two, but eight AI agents. These AI agents all live on the right panel for quicker accessibility. Here is a closer look at each one.

Proofreader

Scoring text isn’t new for Grammarly. But the new “Grammarly Proofreader” goes beyond a simple score of 1 out of 100. It also gives neatly organized suggestions by category, so you can focus on one trouble area at a time.

This AI agent is also intuitive to use. When you click a suggestion, the Docs space instantly highlights the exact text in question. A pop-up card then appears with the recommended change. And, yes, you can still accept or dismiss it with a single click.

Paraphraser

Love how a particular text was worded but don’t want to get your essay flagged with plagiarism? Stuck trying to explain someone else’s idea in your own words? That’s where Grammarly’s Paraphraser works its magic. You can pick from pre-made styles or craft your own voice (you can see it in action below).

This is gold when you want to keep academic integrity while keeping it you.

Expert Review

Some assignments require more than just grammar fixes. That’s where Expert Review comes in.

This AI agent evaluates your text, identifies subject-matter experts, and suggests edits from their perspective. An example is provided when you click the pop-up card, and you can either insert the example or dismiss it.

Here is what it looks like:

What’s in it for you? Well, your writing hits the right tone and style for your field, like how professors expect it.

AI Grader

The AI Grader is like having a professor review your paper before you submit it, without the awkward “Can you look at this?” email.

Its real power is in the why behind the score. Instead of just telling you how you did, it explains the reasoning, pinpointing what’s strong, what’s weak, and what’s missing in relation to your instructor’s expectations.

And it doesn’t stop at generic advice. When you provide the rubric, course details, writing topic, and any publicly available information about your instructor, the AI Grader can tailor its analysis to mirror how your work would be judged in the real classroom.

Don’t have those details? There is a “Check with basic guidelines” option.

Citation Finder

Finding sources that support your claims can be a challenge. The Citation Finder AI scans your writing, spots where claims need support, and hunts for credible sources.

What makes it even better is that you can select the citation style (APA, MLA, and Chicago), insert the reference directly into your essay, or copy the full citation.

Plagiarism Checker

Unintentional plagiarism happens. That’s where Grammarly’s Plagiarism Checker comes in handy. This AI agent scans your text and compares it against tons of academic papers and online sources to spot any similarities. And if something matches, Grammarly will suggest adding a citation. And yes, you can choose between MLA, APA, and Chicago for the citation.

AI Detector

The AI Detector flags parts of your writing that sound AI-generated so you can tweak them before submission. This helps you avoid confusion, policy issues, or being labeled unoriginal, especially useful when professors mandate “no AI.”

Reader Reaction

Ever wish you could test how your readers will respond before submitting your work? Well, now you can! With Reader Reactions, you don’t have to guess or look for someone who’d be happy to look and evaluate your paper.

This AI agent checks your work and gives you what they (your readers) will remember or what might confuse them.

You can choose the intended audience (college students, high school students, academic instructors, edtech reviewers, and writing center staff) to receive more tailored feedback.

Recommended revisions are also available, allowing you to fine-tune your work before submission!

What’s Next for You

And there you have it! Grammarly isn’t just a grammar checker anymore. It has evolved into a full writing support platform that helps you draft, polish, cite, predict, and refine your work for any reader. And it does all of that in one place! If you are a student, that means less switching between tools and more time working on your ideas, argument, and grade.
