Vince Flynn Biography
Vincent Joseph Flynn was an American author who wrote various political thriller novels. He was a number 1 New York Times bestselling author, with all his novels becoming New York Times bestsellers. Flynn was also a consultant for the hit television series “24”. His stand-alone novel Term Limits was an instant hit. The rest of the novels follow Mitch Rapp, who is a CIA counter-terrorist agent. Vincent Flynn enjoyed a successful career as a writer, with some of his books adapted in movies. This Vince Flynn biography tells his early life, success as a writer, and his untimely death.
Vince Flynn was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on April 6, 1966. He was the fifth of seven children, and his father was a teacher while his mother was a wildlife artist. While still in grade school, Vincent Flynn struggled with dyslexia which affected his reading and writing. Flynn attended Saint Thomas Academy, after which he joined St. Thomas College to study Economics.
After completing college, Flynn worked at Kraft General Foods as a sales and account specialist. He later quit the job to join the United States Marine Corps. Unfortunately, Flynn was medically disqualified a week before completing the course. After he failed to become an aviator, Flynn started developing ideas to write a book. He was then employed by United Properties, where he worked as a commercial real estate agent. Flynn would work on his novel during his spare time.
Flynn worked at United Properties for two years before quitting and moving to Colorado to focus full-time on his book. Initially, he struggled as an artist, forcing him to bartend at night and write during the day. He remained determined and finished writing his book Term Limits. Unfortunately, many publishers rejected it.
Flynn went on to self-publish the book and went to the number one position in the Twin Cities area. Within a week, he had an agent, and the publishing house Pocket Books signed a two-book deal. Pocket Boots released Flynn’s second book titled Transfer of Power along with the paperback edition of Term Limits.
In early 2000, Flynn released his third novel, The Third Option, which marked his place as an established political thriller author. The following year he released his fourth book, Separation of Power. In the years that followed, Flynn changed his publisher and signed with Atria Books, who released his fifth novel Executive Power.
Memorial Day and Consent to Kill, which were his sixth and seventh books, came out in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Flynn consulted for 24 between 2005 and 2006. His eighth book, Act of Treason, and ninth Protect and Defend were later published. Extreme Measures was Flynn’s tenth book released in 2008. His publishers signed him for four additional novels, with his eleventh book Pursuit of Honor dropping in 2009.
He released three books between 2010 and 2012, including American Assassin, Kill Shot, and The Last Man from the Mitch Rapp character series. The movie adaptation of American Assassin came out in 2017.
Vince Flynn had three children with his wife Lysa and lived in Twin Cities. He devoted Catholic and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Flynn suffered a rare form of stage III prostate cancer and died on June 19, 2013, at age 47.
